ISLAND LIFE ⎮ liquidity

We image islands as isolated pieces of land surrounded by water; we image Berlin as an urban agglomeration of a manifold of clearly defined neighborhoods, however, the element of water is not particularly present in any of them. While the river Spree is actually flowing over 46km through the city of Berlin, vital parts of its waterfront are undeveloped and not present in peoples’ minds. It almost seems that our river can be described as a secluded island …

Within ADIP’s focus on the theme ‘ISLAND LIFE’ this design studio investigates the local qualities of Berlin’s waterfront between Jannowitz- and Elsenbrücke. Two sites of focus are give: the area surrounding the DAZ between Köpenicker Straße and the river, and an actual island, the Lohmühleninsel. The studio aims at an intensive investigation and understanding of these two sites, their conflicts and potentials, and eventually at a site-specific proposal for a medium scale hybrid housing building.

Encountering the sites and exploring in person the situations you find there today, as well as understanding urban and architectural ideas which have been developed by different expert teams and activists, you will start to immerse in a network of given structures, patterns, behaviors, and needs. In the beginning, the studio will be structured around several exercises which introduce a series of research tools – from theoretical studies, field observation, cartography, and experiments, to interviews. Working with these tools will enable you to set up a profound research to discover specific conditions and parameters. Water and the water’s edge will be always in the focus of our work. With this initial research, you will then be able to translate your retrieved data subsequently into architectural design guidelines. Finally, you will propose and design a new hybrid housing building on one of the given sites. Its program, organization and spatial expression will be guided by the research you have done since the beginning of the semester. Priority will be on the translation of site-specific conditions into architectural space – and the outline of this design studio is set up in way that will enable you to experiment with the site as a template for the built.

It is mandatory to also participate in the integrated research seminar ISLAND LIFE | prosperity (Modul 1.1.7 – 3LP).
