DESIGN STUDIO // ARCHIPELAGO ARCHITECTURE

03/03/2010 | adip office

DESIGN STUDIO
The studio will investigate variations on ‘archipelago’ organizations – agglomeration of dense programs segregated from one another – within the scale architecture.

Based on the hypothesis formulated by Oswald Mathias Ungers titled ‘Berlin as Green Archipelago’ in 1977, where depopulation is treated as a model for the future city; the studio will examine the archipelago model as a generative device for design. Composed of isolated, dense, and defined artifacts surrounded by residual and un-programmed spaces, the notion of architecture as an archipelago will be transposed from Ungers’ urban scale to a building scale. While Unger’s conjecture is specific to Berlin and to a particular moment in time, the notion of archipelago architecture will be transposed from its geographical and historical context to a paradigmatic design strategies.

The studio will be devoted to the production of archipelago architecture through the design of a 100,000sqm mixed-use building for a site situated on the Spree in Kreuzberg.

ADIP RESEARCH
The studio’s research is based on the hypothesis formulated by Oswald Mathias Ungers titled ‘Berlin Green Archipelago’ in 1977. In this study depopulation is treated as a model for the future city.

Initially, the studio will research Ungers’ work together with parallel inquiries. The archipelago model will then be tested as a generative device for design.
